New Discoveries on Diabetes
- Leptin was found with the capability of suppressing diabetic hyperglucagonemia through two physiologic pathways, prevention of potentially toxic lipids accumulation and unrecognization of paracrine interactions between α and β cells. (Cell Metabolism, 2015)
- As β cell failure is one of the major defects in type 2 diabetes mellitus, locally produced apoCIII was identified as an important diabetogenic factor involved in impairment of β cell function. The evidence may also suggest that apoCIII is potentially a novel target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. (PNAS, 2015)
- Neutrophils isolated from type 1 and type 2 diabetic humans and mice were found to produce extracellular traps (NETs, process termed NETosis), which impaired wound healing particularly in diabetes. The evidence supported that inhibiting NETosis or cleaving NETs might improve wound healing and reduce NET-driven chronic inflammation in diabetes. (Nature Medicine, 2015)
